USEFULNESS OF CLOCK DRAWING TEST IN DIFFERENTIATING VARIOUS TYPES OF DEMENTIAS IN POST MENOPAUSAL WOMEN

Background: Drawing and constructional abilities worsen as the disease progresses in Dementia. It has been found that a correlation between widespread brain changes and several neuropsychological deficits in severe Dementia, one of them being drawing disability.

Methods: We have applied Clock Drawing Test (CDT) to evaluate severity of cognitive impairment in various types of dementia which may be undetected by other cognitive screening instruments such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE).

Results: Intergroup comparison showed significant differences of revised scale score between Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Fronto-temporal dementia (FTD)

(p< 0.01). Bengal mental status examination scale (BMSE) score was also significantly different between AD and FTD (p< 0.05) and also between AD and Vascular dementia (VD) (p< 0.05). Clock size was significantly different between AD and VD (p< 0.05).

Conclusion: Qualitative CDT analysis contributes to the identification of different dementias, as it enables the description of specific errors. Future studies should explore the contribution of the qualitative analysis of CDT in samples with various diseases associated with cognitive changes.
